I recently finished reading a very thought provoking book, The Wheel of Life: A Memoir of Living and Dying, by Elisabeth Kubler-Ross. This is one of the best books I have read in a while; I highly recommend it.

The book tells of Elisabeth’s life adventures and her life’s lessons. She provides many insights. Here are a few:

– Everyone goes through hardships in life. The more you go thrugh, the more learn and grow.

– Adversity only makes you stronger.

– When you learn your lessons, the pain goes away.

– Our only purpose is life is growth. There are no accidents.

– There is within each of us a potential for goodness beyond our imagining; for giving which seeks no reward; for listening without judgment; for loving unconditionally.

– You should live until you die.

– You can not heal the world, without healing yourself first.

– If you are ready for spiritual experiences and you are not afraid, you will have them yourself. You do not need a guru or a baba to tell you how to do it.

– Death is but a transition from this life to another existence where there is no more pain and anguish.

– Everything is bearable when there is love.

– The only thing that lives forever is love.

– Dying is nothing to fear. It can be the most wonderful experience of your life. It all depends on how you have lived.

Where Did the Pretzel Get it’s Design – Thought 52

The pretzel is a kind of German Biscuit. It is brittle and twisted, with a glazed, salted surface. Pretzel comes from the Latin word pretiola, meaning a small reward. The pretzel was first made by monks in southern Europe as a reward for children who learned their prayers. It was shaped to represent the crossed arms of a child praying.

The first commercial pretzel bakery in the United States opened in Lititz, Pennsylvania, in 1861. Pretzels were once twisted by hand, and a few bakeries still use this method. But most use twisting machines today.

Interesting . . . a praying child. What do you think?

Why Do We Say “God Bless You” or “Gesundheit” When A Person Sneezes?

Long ago ancient people thought that the soul or spirit of a person was in the breath or air in the head. Not understanding the human body, people also believed that a sneeze might expel this spirit unless God prevented it. So it was important to say immediately, “God Bless You,” or “Gesundheit” (good health in German), or “Salud” (health in Spanish).

If a person from the Far East happened to be near when you sneezed, he or she would quickly clasp hands and bow toward you. This was a way of saying, “May your soul not escape from you!”

What Do You Think?

Sin is basically damage, a rupture in a relationship. It is not really about breaking a rule. Sin is doing something or failing to to something which results in harming a relationship (i.e., with God — not being conscious of God, not praying; with others — anger, gossip, lying; with yourself and with creation (littering, being wasteful, etc.).

Do You Agree?

Mortal sin is the most serious (e.g., murder, mutilation, grand larceny, adultery, destroying a person’s reputation, etc.). For a sin to be mortal it must be a serious matter; there must be sufficient reflection, and it is done with full consent of the will. Its matter is serious; it weighs upon the soul. It gravely affects your relationship with God and your neighbor. It deprives you of the state of grace. Venial sin, on the other hand, is less serious, not as mindful, but nevertheless, violates God’s law of love.

Tribute to Theresa Hummel

The mother of a good friend recently passed. She was blessed with good family and friends; and now she is blessed with God’s presence. There were two prayer cards at the funeral. Both are a tribute to her. May she see the light and rest in peace.

Prayer Card
May the road rise to meet you
May the wind be always at your back
May the sun shine warm upon your face
May the rains fall soft upon your fields
And until we meet again
May God hold you in the palm of his hand.

Prayer Card
God saw she was getting tired
And a cure was not to be.
So He put His arms around her
And whispered, “Come with Me.”

With tearful eyes we watched her suffer
And saw her fade away.
Although we loved her dearly,
We could not make her stay.
A golden heart stopped beating,
Hard working hands to rest.
God broke our hearts to prove to us
He only takes the best.

Over the past few years and decades we have increasing become a society that is based on consumerism and wealth. Success is gauged by the possessions you have. This has led to greed, excesssism, perhaps a decline in morals, values, ethic standards and other evils. Some might say that this bent on consumerism, etc., is partly at fault for our recent economic decline. Though a positive outcome of our current economic woes, is a resurgence and/or escalation of gratitude. This resurgence is one of recognizing, caring more deeply and giving thanks for the simpler things in life. We are seeing a surge in faith, more bonding with God, family and friends. This is true wealth! If you evolve accordingly, you life will more fulfilled, more satisfying and you’ll be happier. What do you think?

To every sincere prayer an answer will come. It may not come just as you desire, or at the time you look for it; but it come in the way and at the time that will best meet your need. The prayers you offer in loneliness, in weariness, in trial, God answers, not always according to your expectations, but always for your good.
E.G. White

We live in a fast paced world. We want it all and we want it now. (This approach may be what got us into this recent economic spiral, but that’s for another day, another post.) But sometimes now is not the best time. Learn patience. Patience is a virtue as the old saying goes. Expecting too much too fast is a bad thing. It results in disappointment, unhappiness, grief, etc. So learn patience, learn that now is not always best. God is watching out for you.

We sang this song in Church Sunday to celebrate Memorial Day. Is America still beautiful? How is it beautiful? What do you think?

O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

One must be a wise reader to quote wisely and well.

A. Bronson Alcott

I often use quotes from famous and not so famous individuals in my writings. A question was posed recently on on another blog as to whether the utilization of quotes is symbolic of intelligence and wiseness, or is it a sign of the inability to express your own thoughts in your own words. I suppose this is a valid debate to which there is no end, nor answer. I personally enjoy reading others words, reading about others thoughts and lives. There is so much to learn from others’ experiences and words. Most of the time, I could have not said it better. So, as they say (a quote), why reinvent the wheel. I leave you with a dozen very common quotes used by many regularly in their day-to-day conversations. They are so common, we know their meanings and we don’t question the wisdom they embellish.

-Live and learn.

-Live and let live.

-What’s done is done.

-To each his own.

-The early bird gets the worm.

-Easy come, easy go.

-The end justifies the means.

-Enough is enough.

- Experience is the best teacher.

-God helps those that help themselves.

- Here today, gone tomorrow.

-With God all things are possible.

Can you add any?

A not so famous quote:

You are accountable and responsible to make it happen . . . to that end, please do so and don’t let me down.

-Speaker to be identified late in this blog.

What does this quote mean?

You are accountable and responsible.
Each of us is accountable and responsible for our lives. No one else is! We often think or blame others, especially when things don’t seem to be going right. But despite what it may seem at times, we control our paths, our lives, our destiny. If you are stuck – its no one’s fault but your’s. Your right to chose is absolute. No one can stop you from doing what you really want. You only think they can. You and only you control your path.

To make it happen.
You and only you can make it happen. Just do what it takes. Sometimes that means thinking outside the box, perhaps leaving your comfort zone. We are not bound by handcuffs. You possess the intelligence, the strength the do whatever needs to be done. Just look inside yourself and you will find it. Courage, desire, drive to make it happen. It’s in everyone one of us. Find it and behave accordingly.

Please do so.
So do it! Please do it! It’s a God given right to do it. God gave us free will so we could do it. The only boundaries on action are our ethics and values. So live not to disappoint – You.

And don’t le me down.
Who should you not let down – you, yourself and no one else.

So whose quote is this? I am told it is mine from many years ago on I a project I ran. I embedded in it into the fabric of the project’s success.

Was it or is it real? Yes. I today, try to live my life accordingly. Do I always succeed? No. Sometimes I am down and out – stuck on a path, perhaps a comfortable path. I may even be stuck for a while. But with prayer, with God’s support, with support from family and friends, I find the courage to take the right path, regardless of how tough. Thank you God for free will.
